Real Nappies For Modern Day Living

Cloth nappies are no longer the origami folds, nappy pins and plastic pants of days gone by!

Modern cloth or reusable nappies are stylish, simple and no more difficult than using a disposable nappy. There are now so many options and cloth nappy makers are trying to make their nappies the easiest of all to use. 'Pocket' or 'All-In-One' cloth are so simple to use that Dad (or Mum, Child Minder, Grandparent or Nursery…) can no longer complain its too complicated for them to change a washable nappy.

Obviously a huge benefit of using cloth nappies is the reduction in land fill, but did you know that real nappies can also save you money! You already start noticing the money saving with your first baby but it’s much greater with any subsequent children as you bought the nappies the first time round. A huge benefit for us was never running out of nappies! No late night dashes to the mini market when we just wanted to sleep!

The world of reusable nappies has seen huge growth over the last few years and its no wonder when you see how luxurious the fabrics and designs are.  Nappies are now easier to wash and you don’t even need the dreaded nappy bucket! We much prefer to ‘dry pail’ in a bag which then gets washed with the nappies too. Nappy rash is now a thing of the past too; your baby will stay comfy and dry with the use of fabrics like fleece and minkee on the lining of the nappy.

We recommend using liners inside all washable nappy systems as this will help remove the solids from the nappies. If using flushable liners, you simply flush the whole lot away – the place where poo should go, not a big hole in the ground! Fleece liners are also excellent as they help to keep the babies bottom dryer. Any poo simply falls off the fleece and down the toilet, meaning you get to reuse your liner too. Liners will also help reduce the staining of the nappies.

To use cloth nappies all day (full time use) you will need approximately 20. Some people say 12 is enough but personally we don’t agree. You will need enough to have some in use, some in the wash and some drying. We also think there is more to life than laundry so we suggest washing every other day. One of the biggest mistakes first time cloth nappies users make is to buy 20 of the same nappy before the baby is born. We suggest getting a few different types to see what suits you first.
